FlaggedRevs Temp Workaround

As you all should be aware by now, FlaggedRevs is causing a large amount of issues with regards to not being able to review pages in the Module namespace. This in turn causes non-logged in users to see script errors on all articles; essentially making the site unusable. Although we are trying our best to fix this issue, we have yet to find a solution.

This brings me to my crude idea of a hot-fix which involves allowing anonymous users see the latest version of all pages rather than just the latest reviewed edit (stable page). This is by no means a permanent fix; rather a temporary fix, as this means that any vandalism or spam on the wiki will be visible to all readers until removed by an editor. I realise this is a big task, as we will be required to step up our game in regards to removing such content from the wiki; however with the fairly-well reliable PonyButt IRC log and with editors across several timezones all with incredibly weird sleeping patterns (as Paladin so kindly put it), we should be able to keep up. --Wolfman_123_ · FTB Wiki Staff 02:41, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

As a result of actions by Retep998, Cblair91, and Game widow, as of 6 hours ago (and as noted at the end of the Discussion section), FlaggedRevs is no longer active on this wiki. Script Errors should no longer be present on articles as a result of it. PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 02:18, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Modules cannot be reviewed, so when you are not logged in you always view the stable version of a page, which means the Modules are not up to date and therefore are broken. Either the FlaggedRevs extension would have to be fixed so Modules can be reviewed properly, or it would have to be removed. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 07:19, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

G? Phasing Out

The move from the old grid style to the new (and current) tilesheet system was a great thing, but in order to keep backwards-compatibility, G? was made to convert anything like |ore=Iron Ore into {{G|Iron Ore}}. The move was a really long time ago, and {{G}} itself really is inferior to {{Gc}} or {{O}}, meaning we're looking to phase out using G?, and try and avoid using {{G}} when you can achieve the same thing more efficiently using {{Gc}} or {{O}} and |link= and more importantly |mod=. With mods ever overlapping of names, it makes pages look much nicer if the grid icons work when the wiki knows which tilesheet to get the image from (which with {{G}}, it doesn't and can only guess, meaning it fails when there's overlapping of names). This is still in an early phase, so information may and probably will change from this. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 21:10, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Looking at Articles dependent on G?, there are slightly more pages than we expected. A few thousand more. Don't worry though, there's a doom counter to know what percent of the wiki currently needs fixing before G? can be deleted safely (ignoring template modifications to stop using it):
And in case you need a more visual representation: Chocohead NagEditsStaff 01:30, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Tooltip formatting

Because I am feeling so generous I have provided another alias to {{Tooltip color}} in the form of {{§}}. In addition it now supports more Minecraft formatting codes such as l m n and o for extra formatting goodness. For some reason using ''Text'' in crafting grid tooltips appears to break things so using {{§|o|Text}} works perfectly. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 04:33, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks to Kythyria we now have an even fancier template {{TTF}} which parses § formatting codes inline in the text and inserts the appropriate markup. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 22:40, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Overhaul RI Template

As good as {{RI}} is, it is still at heart a {{Gc}}, but meaning many parameters that Gc has aren't being used, but are still slowing the wiki having to check them. User:Chocohead/Sandbox/Template:RI fixes this, by stripping it out so it only uses what it uses from the Gc template. There are two different versions depending on how invalid mod abbreviations are entered, the documentation on the template page explains that difference. IMO, this'll make a good template better (by making it more efficient and neat). Chocohead NagEditsStaff 01:32, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Bee and Tree Note

Any bees in Extra Bees or Magic Bees must be referenced to the Forestry tilesheet, due to a bug in NEI, and not me. Combs added by either mod should still reference their respective mod's tilesheet however.

Tree Saplings added by Extra Trees also need to be referenced to the Forestry tilesheet, due to the same bug. The wood planks and other products (like fences or doors) however should still use the Extra Trees tilesheet.

Bug me if you have any questions. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 01:32, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Why don't you just separate them manually? -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 02:06, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
Later, this was only meant to be a temporary solution until I know an update to the tilesheets would come quickly after me doing it. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 02:14, 4 January 2015 (UTC)
Looking at this further, many of the tree/bee templates need all the bees/saplings in one place, otherwise there'd be a massive and horribly complicated mess trying to work out which tilesheet to call the sapling from. Just having everything on F makes life much much easier. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 16:23, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
Just an update. It's not an nei issue/bug. Extra Bees and Magic Bees hook into Forestry's API, and add the bee's VIA that mod. It's the only way to handle the injecting of bees for forestry to allow them to work (for machines/breeding logic etc.). As such, when rendered, they're processed as being "added" by Forestry (since Forestry handles the ASM magical powder stuff), thus appears under that mod =] Cblair91 (talk) 05:21, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
Good, then I'll not bother trying to separate them. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 15:59, 30 March 2015 (UTC)

Xbony2 has been adding translation markup to a significant number of pages and cleaning out incorrect translations already, so this is just rewarding his hard work with the responsibility to keep doing that hard work into perpetuity. If it turns out that one translation admin isn't enough to keep up with the demand of marking pages for translation, and another person happens to be doing a good job adding translation markup to lots of pages, then perhaps we can consider having another translation admin, but that's in the distant future. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 08:24, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

And I think we should stick with the current standard of putting <languages /> at the very bottom since that is what all the pages on the wiki currently do and there's no advantage to changing the position, and it would just cause a lot of churn from having a mass edit to every single article. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 08:28, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Small Tilesheet guide

Hello ! Can any of you write a few words about how to win the graphics for tilesheets please ?! The know the structure, the sizes (32px, 16px) and the construction of tilesheets. But I wonder where you have the graphics ago. I have try it with screenshots and the textures from the package, but somehow it looks not so like your tilesheets. I use Gimp as graphic program. --LuminousLizard de-native / "en-B2" (talk) 21:24, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

The way we typically do it nowadays is using the NEI mod. To get the tiles you simply filter the NEI panel to show the items from the mod by double clicking the modname in the top dropdown box; and then you goto the NEI settings button down the bottom right, then goto "Dumps" and then output the images as a 64x .png. From there retep's tilesheet program automatically downscales the images to 16x and 32x for uploading. -- Wolfman_123_ · FTB Wiki Staff 22:47, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Anyway, these need to be dealt with. Most of them are old and feature outdated content, and they are in the way of using on the module on pages that have been translated the old way. -Xbony2 (talk) 00:45, 26 March 2015 (UTC)

Joining the question. I think I should create a bot script to look up all of articles with subpages that aren't marked for translation. — NickTheRed37 t/c FTBWiki Translator 12:56, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
My current list should include almost all of them, although I did it manually through using the list of categories. Anything not in a category is missed... -Xbony2 (talk) 13:48, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

Poll on What to Write

Last night, I posted a message on /r/feedthebeast, asking what sorts of things I should write about for the wiki. I got back a very large number of responses. So I'm putting them here now, partly as a to-do list, partly so that I'm not the only guy writing, and partly to keep all of us on the same page.

Mods:

I'll be doing a tilesheet upload to Retep's talk page soon for ReactorCraft, that should help with recipes and what not. Luke14199 (talk) 05:24, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Getting Started pages:

Guide pages:

Miscellaneous:

  • Designs for how to make more efficient systems / builds / factories
Regarding RotaryCraft and ReactorCraft systems, Reika has expressed a dislike of people simply copying other designs, he's created these mods in such a way that doing this usually results in more pain for the user than benefit. Reason being that they don't understand the mechanics that make up the designs. (That being said, if they understand the mechanics and simply want to find a more efficient design, I'm sure he's all for that). Luke14199 (talk) 05:24, 10 January 2016 (UTC)
  • Data, calculations, and ratios, especially for Botania

The two most voted-for items were Thaumcraft 4 and Blood Magic, so those are probably where most of our work should go first. - PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 01:41, 29 April 2015 (UTC)

Any of Jaded's packs, like Agrarian Skies 2, are actually being covered by her own wiki [1]. That said if the pack is publicly listed in the FTB launcher it can still also be documented here. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 03:04, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
I can help with the Forestry Guide, and I guess Buildcraft and Factorisation, although the BC stuff is horribly outdated which makes life annoying. With everything else I have only played Logi pipes on 1.2.5 and a little on 1.4.7 so I can't help especially.
I was a little surprised there was no new IC2/GT6 stuff, but it is /r/feedthebeast, which isn't typically fans of either. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 15:23, 29 April 2015 (UTC)
Yo PaladinOne: I'll be making the PA and TD tilesheets once vacation is over (I have my laptop with me, but it's old and can't use Java 7-8, so I imagine Rust will not work). Unless of course Retep beats me to it (and unless XyCraft is released for 1.7) -Xbony2 (talk) 00:55, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
Done. May be broken though, I haven't looked yet :P -Xbony2 (talk) 00:32, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Mass-edit bot policy

Due to things, Retep998 and I have decided that we need a hard rule for when to use a bot. A bot policy, for those of you that like names. I looked in our existing policies, and despite my memory, it seems we do not have one yet. As shown by disagreements about when you are performing too many (nearly) identical edits as a human account on Xbony's talk page, some editors consider "too many" to be a lot larger than others. This disrupts editing and reviewing and takes time away from our staff. Peter and I have discussed briefly on IRC about this, and have decided that 20 would be a good number of (nearly) identical edits to start the discussion at. There will be no vote; the administrators will simply take your input and make an executive decision based on that. Please discuss. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 23:48, 22 September 2015 (UTC)

Just commenting to mention that I am supporting this policy. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 23:52, 22 September 2015 (UTC)
25-35 would be more appropriate. 20 is barely the size of my palm against my monitor. -Xbony2, Master of Feed The Beast Wiki (talk) 00:14, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
Anything more than 25 is too much IMO, the default recent changes settings shouldn't have to be increased purely because someone doesn't care spamming them with the same thing. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 12:19, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
I didn’t saw the IRC discussion (probably because my ZNC disconnected), but I agree with everyone else. Something between 20 and 30 is possibly enough for the line. — NickTheRed37 t/c FTBWiki Translator 17:45, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
20 or 25 would be fine for a hard line, but at user discretion I'd like to encourage bot usage whenever possible for repetitive minor edits. -PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 22:30, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Dates on Project Pages

Idea: Should Project pages (ACG, MOS) have a line at the top or bottom indicating obviously when the page was last updated? This would make it easier for editors to know if the wiki policies have been changed.

Second idea which I may just go and implement myself when I'm not on an iPad: fix capitalization of Project page titles, because right now they are not capitalized in manner that fits them being full titles. -PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 01:13, 25 September 2015 (UTC)

1. not sure if this is just on mobile but from what I can see it does clearly state when it was last edited. 2. If you do that be sure to start a discussion for each one beforehand. Some should be sentence cased. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 02:37, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
That would appear to be either just on mobile or just when you're looking at a specific edit, not the page itself. -PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 05:53, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
I just got around to looking. It's there on desktop version: http://puu.sh/kDEIO/b8417f29ab.png -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 04:18, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

New rule

I have a proposal for a new rule. It's a bit obvious, but here goes- the output argument in a Cg template should never be ore dictionaried. Cause that's retarded. -Xbony2, Master of Feed The Beast Wiki (talk) 11:28, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Firstly, don't use the word retarded. It's offensive and ignorant. Secondly, no. If a mod outputs an OreDictionary entry, set the O parameter to that OreDictionary entry, then go report it as a bug because the mod should not do that. Our job is to provide accurate information on the mods. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 00:22, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
You cannot output a ore dictionary entry in a recipe. That is not possible. No mod ever output an OreDictionary entry. -Xbony2, Master of Feed The Beast Wiki (talk) 00:39, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
To elaborate, putting multiple items an output isn't a bad convention, it is a compiler error. -Xbony2, Master of Feed The Beast Wiki (talk) 01:05, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
You're wrong, at least in 1.7 and the version that I'm using for my mod development. The whole point of GT Error 01 was because Forge did not report it in any way. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 01:54, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
It is possible for mods to use an oredict entry as the output of a recipe, although it is incorrect. GregTech did indeed catch and report such mistakes. Anyway, the output of a Cg template should use exactly what the mod uses. If the mod outputs an oredict item like an idiot, then we should reflect that. If the mod outputs a specific item, then use that specific item. Our job is to provide accurate information, with all the bugs and typos that the mod comes with. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 02:10, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

^ ??? -Xbony2, Master of Feed The Beast Wiki (talk) 11:10, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

I don't understand your argument. If a mod adds a recipe like that, it should be documented like that. End of story. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 19:51, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
I don't understand how that is possible to add. Can we at least agree putting an ore dictionary entry as an output for Cg is inappropriate when the actual recipe is a plain ol' item? -Xbony2, Master of Feed The Beast Wiki (talk) 20:45, 9 October 2015 (UTC)
Doing that would be wrong as that's not the recipe from the mod anyway, so of course. Chocohead NagEditsStaff 21:33, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Moving wiki-specific pages from mainspace

Specifically Sandbox and Feed The Beast Wiki:FTB Wiki Staff, if not more. The main namespace is for articles about FTB; wiki-specific pages should be stated separately, in Feed The Beast Wiki namespace. I don't know why are they misplaced.

For the staff page specifically, we have to make a new name to be used after the colon, the namespace name separator. I would go for "Wiki Staff", or just "Staff", so the whole name would be like "Feed The Beast Wiki:Wiki Staff".

Of course, we should keep the redirects.

— NickTheRed37 t/cRussian Translator 12:37, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

I think Feed The Beast Wiki:FTB Wiki Staff is ok, but Sandbox definitely should be moved. -Xbony2 (talk) 21:10, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
No it's not. — NickTheRed37 t/c FTBWiki Translator 06:35, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
I consider it to be a main page of sorts, like the actual main page. The way I see it, it's sort of a credits page (although that isn't entirely accurate, there are many non-staff contributors). -Xbony2 (talk) 11:39, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
This is a wiki about FTB, not about itself. — NickTheRed37 t/c FTBWiki Translator 13:34, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
I agree with you, Nick. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 13:36, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
We need more users... to support and to oppose. — NickTheRed37 t/c FTBWiki Translator 14:38, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
General MediaWiki guidelines specify both of these should really be in project namespace, I will probably patrol through a bunch of other common titles that will go into the project NS, and deal with when and where applicable. Either way, this is common practice and in my opinion, shouldn't really need a discussion. Cblair91 (talk) 16:46, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

So? — NickTheRed37 t/c FTBWiki Translator 11:17, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes checkyes. I just independently had the same thought, however the page is protected so I can't do it myself. Santa? -PaladinAHOne Staff (talk) 00:33, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm okay with moving these to the FTB namespace. 🐇Retep998🐇🐰Bunny Overlord🐰 03:30, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

I have written the code needed for this, however there is a little issue in MediaWiki::Butt that I need to address before it'll work. I'm hoping to get a new release of the gem out soon, probably at some point in the next few days or later in the week. -- SatanicSantaFTB Wiki Admin 04:29, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
