Staff nomination

Succubism on the FTB Forums has created detailed and informative guides on various mods, she is also recommended by various members of the FTB Team. Although she has yet to create an account on the wiki, I believe, judging by her works on the forum, that she would be able to follow the wiki formatting and content guidelines just fine. Her ability to create guides for mods is exceptional and would benefit the wiki greatly, therefore I nominate her to be a Wiki Editor on the FTB Wiki Team. -- Jinbobo 14:27, 12 November 2013 (GMT)

Final stage of the crafting grid overhaul project

Before I begin recreating crafting grids and populating the ore dict, please decide whether you want to use the new system.

Benefits of the new system

  • Ore dictionary
  • Simpler invocation of tanks.
  • Simplified crafting grid template creation.
  • Infinite animation frames.
  • Variables in tooltips.
  • Full implementation of grid functionality.
  • Automatically resolve file names and links of items with mod variants in grids.

Downsides of the new system

  • Slightly more typing when implementing crafting grids in articles.
  • Cannot animate the ore dictionary and normal animations at the same time.

Comparisons

Note that some names of templates are not final and may change in the future.

Grids

Grids are much the same except that animation using a list is no longer supported, Instead you use a wrapper to active the animation.

Code Result
Old
{{Grid|Ice,Dirt,TNT}}
New
{{N|begin}}{{Gc|Ice|mod=V}}{{Gc|Dirt|mod=V}}{{Gc|TNT|mod=V}}{{N|end}}

The grid template now automatically resolves of mod counterparts of items. Observe where the grid links to and what the tooltip displays.

Code Result
Old
{{Grid|Iron Gear (BC)}}
New
{{G|Iron Gear|mod=BuildCraft}}
or
{{Gc|Iron Gear|mod=BC}}

Variables are now also supported inside grids and tanks.

Code Result
Cells
{{G|Iron Gear|10|mod=BC|title=$2 $1s from $3.}}

10
Tanks
{{G/T|lava|2500|10000|title=$2 out of $3mB of $1.}}
Liquid Lava
GUI tank 120

All other old parameters are still supported.

Tanks

Before you have to type out a string of complicated code that I wouldn't even try to type to create a tank, now you only have to type out the type of liquid, the amount of liquid used, and the maximum amount of liquid. Also, in the old template, due to the way the it is implemented, it was impossible to generate a tooltip for tanks, now, a tooltip is generated automatically and does support variables like grids do. Another perk is to not need to capitalize the first letter of the liquid name.

Code Result
Old
asfjhalskufhakjsdhflaksuhefkajshflkuehsdf
asfjhalskufhakjsdhflaksuhefkajshflkuehsdf
New
{{G/T|water|8000|10000}}
Liquid Water
GUI tank 120

Ore dictionary

An ore dictionary has now been implemented. To call it you use:

{{G|Oak Wood Planks}}{{G|Copper Ore}}

produces:

Note that you call the ore dictionary directly with the normal grid template, set no-oredict to 1 if you do not want to use the ore dictionary:

{{G|Oak Wood Planks|no-oredict=1}}

produces:
You also can call the grid display logic to achieve the same effect.

{{Gc|Oak Wood Planks}}

produces:
You can also call the ore dict by supplying the ore dictionary with a tag name. A wrapper is created to achieve this effect:

{{O|plankWood}}

produces:

Crafting Grids

Creating crafting grids is now easier than ever. Compare the code of Template:Grid/Carpenter with Template:Cg/Carpenter.

Animation and slides

Animation and slide wrappers are created and can be used in lots of situations. They both cycle through divs and spans.

{{N|begin}}<span>A</span><span>B</span><span>C</span><span>D</span>{{N|end}}

produces:

ABCD
{{N|begin|slide=1}}<span>A</span><span>B</span><span>C</span><span>D</span>{{N|end}}

produces:

Implementation of crafting grids in articles

Crafting grids previously automatically cycle through items, now it does not, instead the user would have to click on buttons to flip through pages. Some stuff you normally will have to type to create tanks can be omitted here since it is included in the crafting grid template.

Code Result
Old
{{Grid/Carpenter
|A1=Ice,Dirt,TNT,Oak Wood Planks|A1A=2,4,8,16
|A2=Grass,Copper Ingot,Iron Gear (BC),Glass|A2A=64,32,16,8
|tank=Water,Honey,Lava,Fuel|mB=2000,6000,1000,9000}}
New
{{Cg/Carpenter
|{{Gc|Ice|mod=V|2}}{{Gc|Dirt|mod=V|4}}{{Gc|TNT|mod=V|8}}{{Gc|Oak Wood Planks|mod=V|16}}
|20={{T|Water|2000}}{{T|Honey|6000}}{{T|Lava|1000}}{{T|Fuel|9000}}
|A2={{Gc|Grass|mod=V|64}}{{Gc|Copper Ingot|mod=F|32}}{{Gc|Iron Gear|16|mod=BC}}{{Gc|Glass|mod=V|8}}}}

Non-Language Links

The Problem

There are two types of links at the moment;

{{L|Link|o=Overwrite}}

Which links to wiki.feed-the-beast.com/Link*/language* - if you're on a language page, it links to the link, but in said language - , and shows up like Overwrite.

[[Link|Overwrite]]

Which links to wiki.feed-the-beast.com/Link, and shows up like Overwrite.

Why is this a problem?

Old pages still use the (inferior) [[]] system. People who translate such pages, forget to add */language* at the end of the links, and it just makes a giant mess out of translated pages.
Any page with {{L|}} links is translated faster (because links won't need edits other than maybe overwrites).

Solution

Bot-edit all pages with old links.

Notes

  • Bot-editing those pages would mean that all [[category:*category*]] links would become {{L|category:*category*}} links, which would create separated language categories. Might wanna filter those out.

Discussion

  • What are you suggesting? {{L}} on every page? That would be a no. And the notes part, having separate categories for translated articles is intended, but currently using {{L}} to create such links is currently broken, I'll have to fix it later. -- Jinbobo = Wiki Team Lead = 04:04, 10 August 2013 (BST)
    • The categories in {{L|Category:*category*}} are working fine for me, I believe there's no problems in changing all links, really. --Alistaire (talk) 15:39, 10 August 2013 (BST)
    • Training 5 people is easier than training 50 people. If we changed all links to {{L}}, normal editors will start forgetting to add them and will become more of a pain in the ass. If you see a translator not converting links, post a warning linking to the translating guide asking them to do so. -- Jinbobo = Wiki Team Lead = 16:45, 10 August 2013 (BST)

Mod item naming convention

Currently the naming convention are the following:

  • <Item name> [(<Mod abbv: (F|TE|IC2|BC)>)] for files.
  • <Item name> [(<Full mod name>)] for articles.

Problem

The current problem with this setup is that in some situation that items from different mods act differently, items in crafting grids will point to the article with the exact same name. For example: A grid icon will point to: Tin Gear (TE), but that actual Tin Gear articles is at Tin Gear (Thermal Expansion). An additional redirect must be created in order reach the correct article.

Solution A (AgentTadpole)

Unify the naming and use the file naming convention on articles.

<Please insert reason here>

Solution B (Jinbobo)

Unify the naming and use the article naming convention on files.

Titles should be descriptive, if there articles for forestry, buildcraft and thermal expansion and a user searches for the item. All three article will show up in the result, considering these differences aren't significant enough to have disambiguation pages created, if the article title has the full mod name instead of a abbreviation in it, it would be easier to identify and navigate to the article the user is looking for.

Solution C

Use the current conventions and create redirects from to the correct articles.
