Alternate Terrain Generation (ATG) is a mod by TTFTCUTS based around reworking the entire Vanilla biome and general world generation. This is done by selecting ATG's new world type when creating the world. Vanilla world generation uses a Random Number Generator (RNG) to create the biomes. Terrain is then determined by what the biome type is.
ATG instead uses its height, temperature, and moisture maps that it creates to form the terrain of the world. The biome is then determinined by the terrain. ATG worlds are meant to be similar to that of the real world. It achieves this by making the areas of higher altitude colder, using snow and ice, while areas away from the sea is much hotter and dryer.
ExtrabiomesXL, Biomes O' Plenty, and Highlands all have biome support for ATG. In other words, biome-adding mods will still work as normal when ATG is installed, but will still undergo the same world-gen routine as Vanilla ATG.
