The Arcane Alembic is a block added by Thaumcraft 4. It is used to store distilled essentia after items are put through the Alchemical Furnace.
Arcane Alembics are placed on top of an Alchemical Furnace to store essentia after items are burned from the latter. Each Alembic can only carry 32 units of any one type of essentia, and different types will be funneled up to the next empty Alembic. A maximum of 5 Alembics can be stacked on 1 Furnace.
When right-clicking on an Alembic with a Wand or an empty hand, a general amount of its current capacity will appear in the message window. The possible messages are:
- "The alembic is empty."
- "The alembic is almost empty."
- "The alembic is half full."
- "The alembic is almost full."
- "The alembic is full."
Shift right-clicking in the same manner will empty the Alembic. Unlike the Crucible, this will not cause any flux gas to accumulate. When the player right-clicks while holding a Glass Phial that is empty, it will take 8 units directly from the alembic. When the Phial is full, right-clicking will deposit its contents into the Alembic provided it is the same type.
Essentia can be stored in greater amounts through the use of Essentia Tubes and Warded Jars. By placing Tubes on the sides of the Alembic, Jars can be half filled per Alembic. Jars can also directly take essentia from the Alembic in the same way a Phial acts.

Using basic alchemical principles you have devised a way to break down objects and convert them into essentia. The first step in this process requires an Alchemical Furnace. The alchemical furnace works much like a normal furnace by burning coal to produce heat, but instead of smelting ore into metal, it breaks down objects into a slurry of raw, unprocessed essentia. The next step in the process is to take the essentia slurry and distill it using an Arcane Alembic. To work, arcane alembics need to be placed on top of an alchemical furnace. The essentia slurry will slowly be drawn into the alembic and the individual aspected essentia separated out. If the alchemical furnace is being powered by alumentum, this distillation process is much faster. You can stack up to 5 different alembics on top of a single furnace.
The essentia can then be extracted out of an alembic using phials.
