Curse created video game mod host CurseForge, owned the Curse Network of gaming community websites, and created wiki farm, Gamepedia.

History[]

Curse (2006-2016)[]

CurseForge was first released as CurseBeta and focused on add-ons for the MMO game World of Warcraft. It was renamed to Curse and expanded to other games such as Minecraft. Curse developed and acquired many gaming communities and wikis. Curse also developed Curse Voice[1][2][3] which was available for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android[4][5][6][7], which would later be merged into Curse Client, Curse's mod manager and communication software.

Under Twitch (2016-2018)[]

In August 2016, Curse, Inc. was bought by Twitch Interactive.[8] In April 2017, the Curse Client was rebranded as the Twitch Desktop App and gained a dedicated browser for the Twitch website as well as Twitch's friends and text messaging features, and activity sharing.[9][10]

Acquisition of Curse Media by Fandom (2018-2019)[]

As part of the sale to Fandom, Twitch Interactive spun off the Curse Media division into its own company, merging Curse with Twitch Interactive. On December 12, 2018, Curse Media was acquired by and merged into Fandom - this excluded CurseForge, which stayed with Twitch.[11][12][13][14][15] In mid-2020, Fandom merged Gamepedia's login services with Fandom's. Gamepedia wikis were migrated to the Unified Community Platform with the FandomDesktop theme (previously used the Hydra theme) and Gamepedia's domain was replaced by Fandom's.[16] This meant that Gamepedia and Fandom wikis merged and led to much community outcry.[17][18]

Fandom sold Curse Network properties such as Minecraft Forum to Magic Find in 2019.[19][20] On May 20, 2019, it was announced that Minecraft Forum would become archived on June 16, 2019, until Magic Find acquired it and the archival was subsequently cancelled on June 12, 2019. [21]

CurseForge[]

Main article: CurseForge

CurseForge is a website hosted and owned by Overwolf. It hosts Bukkit plugins, customization (miscellaneous content, mainly mod configurations), addons, mods, modpacks, resource packs and worlds for Minecraft: Java Edition, as well for other games. CurseForge allows authors to earn rewards.

Gamepedia[]

Gamepedia was launched by Curse in December 2012 and partnered with numerous companies and game developers for official video game wikis.[22] Since Fandom's acquisition of Curse, Gamepedia has been merged into Fandom.[13]

The Gamepedia Minecraft Wiki was official until October 2021.[23][24][25][26][27]

Partnership with Feed The Beast[]

In January 2014, Feed The Beast announced a partnership with Curse, Inc.[28] FTB discontinued the FTB Launcher in favor of Curse Client. FTB modpacks have been hosted on CurseForge since the partnership. As part of the partnership, the FTB Wiki was hosted on Gamepedia.

On October 8th, 2019, Feed The Beast announced that their contract with Curse, Inc. had ended and that they would no longer use the service and would instead recreate their own launcher.[29] They had planned to remove their content from the site on the 31st of October. This was until Overwolf acquired CurseForge from Twitch on June 22, 2020.[30][31][32]
