Translation of items

Hello everyone, and specifically our newcomers Teroblaze, MrCraft1124, and Raidau.

When Russian Minecraft Wiki — my home wiki — was created (September 2010 — during Infdev?), there were no in-game translations of Minecraft. The wiki — and notably its administration — had to make its own translations of game elements’ names to use. Administrators were interested in keeping the Russian language clean and making quality translations, and were ready to argue with illiterate people that preferred transliterations and other things deemed as “garbage”.

In late 2011, Jeb announced that Minecraft will have an in-game translation into dozens of languages, including Russian. There were worries about possible quality of translations if they will not be based on the wiki’s ones (mcw:ru:Обсуждение Minecraft Wiki:Локализация#Локализация) — and they were confirmed.

As of now, we have enough inconsistencies between wiki’s translations, made and corrected by editors, and in-game translations, made at Crowdin by general community. Until these inconsistencies are over, we need to know which translations and more importantly — traditions of translation — to use. Set traditions are needed to have guidance in translating elements of mods.

I’m bringing this question up because I want consistency in our translations. I usually prefer translation traditions of Russian Minepedia’s administration, while majority of the community doesn’t. Disagreements cause conflicts. Let’s establish a consensus and bypass the possible conflicts.

The FTB Wiki is a sister wiki of the Minecraft Wiki, and thus a sister wiki of the Russian Minecraft Wiki (even if GreenStone doesn't like us). Keeping consistencies between them would make sense, in my opinion. -Xbony2 (talk) 16:22, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

Russian Minecraft Wiki originated separately from English one, and FTB Wiki also originated separately, so this doesn’t count. It’s just me that may bind the wikis together. Off-topic: GreenStone just opposes removal of mods from Russian Minepedia, and consideration of this wiki’s translations as an official alternative. Russian Minecraft Wiki

I personally suggest to go to and edit the Russian Minecraft Wiki instead of translating this wiki. Exactly it needs quite a lot of attention. It does describe mods, so ambitions regarding them shouldn’t be lost. I don’t see sense in keeping this project — FTB Wiki’s Russian translation project — supported, as Russian Minecraft Wiki appears to be way more popular. This is by no means an ad campaign — that wiki project really needs to be supported.

Я лично предлагаю вместо перевода этой вики редактировать русскоязычную Minecraft Wiki. Именно она нуждается в особом внимании, . Модификации она описывает, так что амбиции касательно них впустую не потеряются. Я не вижу смысла в поддерживании этого проекта, проекта перевода FTB Wiki на русский язык — русскоязычная Minecraft Wiki кажется более популярной. We're not ending any of our translation projects. If people prefer to use and contribute to the Russian Minecraft Wiki, than that's fine by me. The Unofficial FTB Wiki is more popular than this wiki, but for the same reasons we're not going to move to it.

You're talking like we have no right to exist, like Greenstone (now AttemptToCallNil) did about a year and a half ago. If you want to create and maintain your own mod pages, then you have every right to do so, just like we have every right to do so.

Also, this message (your message) is in fact an ad, and kind of an unwanted one, no matter how you put it. If I posted a message on the Russian Minecraft encouraging people to leave and translate here, how would you and the other Russian Minepedians feel? Ticked off? AttemptToCallNil didn’t say that you shouldn’t exist. You misinterpreted his words, or I did so then. He was only talking about the Russian translation and only that it shouldn’t be considered official and nothing more. It can exist, but he doesn’t want it to be considered official.

If you wish, I resign from the unneeded staff system. I don’t see sense in it either.

Official in what sense? This is the official wiki for FTB, not for Minecraft. Our Russian translations are therefore the official FTB documentation in Russian. The Russian Minecraft Wiki is the official Russian documentation for Minecraft. 🐇Retep998🐇^{🐰Bunny Overlord🐰} 15:31, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

"I think that all mods should be documented on a single place, which will be the official one. I request a replacement for cooperation with FTB Wiki, that is to tell [this wiki] and English Minecraft Wiki that we should be the only official Russian-language wiki about all topics regarding Minecraft, including mods." was the translated quote you provided a while back. I've heard he's changed his stance, but that was his stance, unless you translated it incorrectly- that the Russian Minecraft Wiki should be the only Russian information source regarding Minecraft, including mods. The Russian Minecraft Wiki is the official Russian Minecraft Wiki. And this wiki is the official FTB Wiki. But I wouldn't say the Russian Minecraft Wiki is the official Russian Modded MC Wiki- the idea of an official (as in, considered official by Mojang) modded wiki contradicts the idea of mods altogether. -Xbony2 (talk) 14:38, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Again I ask you, official according to who? Mojang can choose a wiki to be their official wiki, but so can FTB, and so can every single mod! This FTB Wiki is the official wiki for FTB and for a bunch of mods including GregTech. Nobody has the right to change that official status except the entity that gave it in the first place. If you mean official according to Gamepedia, well that's kinda silly because I'm pretty sure every Gamepedia wiki is an official Gamepedia wiki. 🐇Retep998🐇^{🐰Bunny Overlord🐰} 18:05, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Okay, forget that. Official or not, this is a secondary matter and has no relevance here.

I just want to get more users into my home project, Russian Minecraft Wiki. I have a somewhat chauvinistic idea to bring all potential users to a single but popular and well-developed wiki which needs them. Most of Russian players could be not aware of this wiki, and they look into Russian Minepedia instead. Right now I don’t see reasons why someone would prefer this wiki over that one. Russian Minepedia may have somewhat obsolete information, but it appears to be fuller than the Russian language translation project here. And with work of potential new users like LEOnator1222, it will be even more prosperous.

Also. This wiki has cool templates, appliances and whatnot, but it is made in a way that may look like it’s limiting creativity in non-English articles. Someone could think that wrong information from the original has to be translated (unless fixed in the original itself, after what a translation administrator updates the translation data, which may take a while), not fixed in the translation. Also the dreaded staff system which appears to be totally unnecessary. — NickTheRed37 (talk) 14:22, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

It's far easier to translate here than to create original content over there, assuming you have a strong grasp of English. That's the biggest advantage, plus the well-developed templates and whatnot.

I know you want to improve your "home project", but trying to advertise to and snatch up the translators here is very much unwanted. Just leave us in peace; people will contribute to the Russian Minecraft Wiki if they want, or to this wiki if they want to. Also according to my survey, so far nobody really cares about the "dreaded" staff system. -Xbony2 (talk) 15:13, 14 July 2016 (UTC)
