Warp is a mechanic added by Thaumcraft 6. It is the representation of the player's mind and body being twisted by gaining forbidden knowledge and crafting certain items. The effects of Warp range from minor debuffs to spawning monsters like Eldritch Guardians.

Warp can be viewed with a Sanity Checker. A full gauge represents 100 or more Warp, with darker shades of purple representing more persistent types.

Types[]

There are three types of Warp, differing mostly in sources and persistence of the effect:

  • Permanent Warp: cannot be removed, usually gained by unlocking forbidden knowledge in the Thaumonomicon,
  • Normal Warp (also known as sticky Warp): Gained from most Warp sources other than Eldritch Guardian attacks. It can be slowly removed with Sanitizing Soap.
  • Temporary Warp: Gained from most Warp sources. It slowly disappears on its own and can be completely removed with Sanitizing Soap.

Sources[]

Warp can be gained by:

  • Unlocking forbidden topics in the Thaumonomicon
  • Picking cards related to the Eldritch in theorycrafting
  • Crafting items unlocked with forbidden knowledge
  • Using Crimson Rites or Eldritch Curiosities
  • Eating Zombie Brains
  • Witnessing certain instability events during infusion crafting
  • Potential side effect of infusion enchanting
  • Collapsing a Flux Rift that is not fully stabilized
  • Getting attacked by an Eldritch Guardian
  • Holding or equipping items with the Warping trait so long as they are equipped

Effects[]

Every 1 minute 40 seconds, there is a small chance a Warp event will be triggered. Each triggered effect will slightly lower the effective Warp value used by events and decrease the chance that they will happen, until they cease entirely, but this effect is reset whenever the player gains any Warp. Items with Warping decrease the speed at which this is done. Wearing a Thaumium Fortress Helm with a Grinning Devil Faceplate slightly lowers the effective Warp value as well. Every Warp event is accompanied with a heartbeat sound, and most of them also have a flavor message describing them.

The events, in ascending order of Warp requirements, are:

  • Emitting a Creeper hiss, only to the player.
  • Emitting an explosion sound nearby, only to the player.
  • Warning the player against something behind them.
  • Inflicting Flux Flu with a level equal to for 4 minutes 10 seconds.
  • Inflicting Thaumorrhea for seconds, but not longer than 1 hour.
  • Inflicting Unnatural Hunger with a level equal to , but not higher than 4, for 4 minutes 10 seconds.
  • Warning the player that something is following them.
  • Spawning a single Eldritch Guardian.
  • Inflicting Blurred Vision for seconds, but not longer than 26 minutes 40 seconds.
  • Inflicting Sun Scorned with a level equal to for 4 minutes 10 seconds.
  • Inflicting Mining Fatigue with a level equal to for 1 minute.
  • Inflicting Flux Phage with a level equal to for 5 minutes.
  • Inflicting Night Vision for seconds, but not longer than 5 minutes.
  • Inflicting Deadly Gaze with a level equal to for 5 minutes.
  • Spawning harmless Mind Spiders around the player, that can be only seen by that player. The amount spawned is equal to the player's .
  • Warning the player that something is watching them.
  • Spawning multiple Eldritch Guardians. The amount spawned is equal to .
  • Inflicting Blindness for seconds, but not longer than 26 minutes 40 seconds
  • Reducing the player's normal Warp by 1.
  • Inflicting Unnatural Hunger with a level equal to for 5 minutes
  • Spawning a Lesser Crimson Portal around the player.
  • Spawning hostile Mind Spiders around the player. The amount spawned is equal to the player's .
  • Spawning multiple Eldritch Guardians. The amount spawned is equal to .

Other effects[]

Voidseer's Pearl's Vis discount is increased by the amount of permanent Warp the wearer has.

Crimson Rites can only be used if the sum of the player's normal and permanent Warp is higher than 20.

Reducing the effects[]

While Warp cannot be fully removed, the effects can be reduced or temporarily suppressed:

  • Purifying Bath Salts can be thrown into Water to make Purifying Fluid, which applies Warp Ward for a duration dependent on the user's Warp.
  • Sanitizing Soap can be used to remove all temporary Warp and a small amount of normal Warp.
  • Warp effects will slowly cease as long as the player does not gain any Warp.

Wuss Mode[]

When Wuss Mode is enabled, Warp effects and spread of taint do not occur at all.
